kitchen play

The sun now casts it golden afternoon glow on different parts of our yard. The grass feels cooler earlier and twilight creeps up on us much faster often dampening a full washing line with the cold night air. The weather is erratic with spits of rain one minute, biting sun the next and often sees us wake in flannelette pjs, explore the morning in shorts and singlets and then onto pants and long sleeves as the evening draws near. Blankets adorn the beds now although only cover us in the early morning. Moods are tumbled and jumbled also.

Out of doors seems the perfect elixir to weary temperaments and short fuses. Fresh air in our lungs and the sight of growing things, of blue sky, of clouds. Space for chubby legs to propel themselves faster and faster still. An environment to cultivate slow, deep play where the confines of four walls no longer hem us in with their rules and where the floor beneath us is not averse to our mess. A place to twirl around til you get giddy, a place to delight in each others' company with ample space between bodies to allow all to move freely and at will, a place to surrender to the Mother Nature's rebalancing and breathe in the now.

How are you adjusting to the "Autumnal grumps" as we call it here?

One afternoon I heaved the poppets' play kitchen down stairs. A tiny table and chairs joined it along with a tablecloth, teapot with water, cups and bowls of rice, lentils and beans. With spoons and scoops the babies played in this little world all afternoon.

  1. What a wonderful play time with the lentils and beans! I empathise with needing the outdoors to bring us that freeing release that Autumn moods crave. A lovely post, your blog is fast becoming a favourite of mine. Keep your eye out for a blog post of mine later this week... You feature. Xx
