succulents

I come from very green thumbed stock I do. My Mum has that wondrous ability to cajole leafy things back from the brink. A happy day to her is one where bucket loads of mulch are filled and spread with care around grateful plant friends; a day where her hands get dirty.

One would assume that an innate love of growing things would have naturally filtered down into me via the umbilical cord but alas, a gardener I am not. At least I was not.  Perseverance, alot of reading, quite a few sacrificial specimens and a deep desire to open up the world of nature for my babies has led to more successes than failures. I am growing things.

I'm enjoying the minute evolutions; a bud to a flower, a flower to a fruit. I'm relishing the zeal with which she examines these living, breathing organisms. The way he digs his fingers deep into the turned earth. I'm remembering to water them....most of the time.

What are you growing? Are you having success? I'd love to know.

These chipped Pyrex bowls were uncovered at the op shop. They were unusable in the kitchen but too lovely to pass up! We added a good handful of rocks for some drainage, some potting mix and some hardy succulents. I'm proud to say that these photos were taken quite a while ago and these lovelies are still thriving. Being desert plants is probably their saving grace.

  1. they are so pretty, the bowls, and I love succulents too. Around here we grow herbs and vegetables in the garden, but enjoy the native blooms that are around the neighbourhood too. x

  2. they look really lovely in the dishes. a good idea. we keep flowers in pots around the verandah - that way they at least get watered and cared for. we have a small vege garden with quite a variety of vegetable and fruit. it seems to be going well. the kids love it most. xo

  7. What a lovely way to use pyrex bowls.
I like to think I have a green thrumb. I don't know where I get it from though... my mum is known to be the plant killer, and the only time my dad gardens is to mow the lawn. Ha ha.
Gardening takes a lot of patience and it's a constant lesson. The picture you painted of your mum made me smile.
    Have a wonderful week.

  8. Sadly, I did not inherit the green thumb either but I do try. Succulents are really the only thing I have ever had success with, being that they are so hardy. We have tried an edible garden with varied results and keep a few pots of herbs handy. One day I dream of having enough knowledge and know-how to have a productive vegie patch.
Those pyrex bowls are perfect as plant pots.

I've been thinking about succulents for a long time, but have yet to take the plunge...

  16. Our garden has been sorely neglected over the winter but last weekend we all got out and gave it a little spruce up of pruning, weeding, mowing, etc and it looks great. I love being called out there by the spring sun.
