Hands
The woolly tufts of a beloved teddy. A piece of sea glass polished of it's treacherous edges by the constant ebb and flow of the tide. Soft, springy grass still damp from morning dew. A timber table; strong, smooth and almost still breathing with life.
Hands. From the very first moments they grasp, they reach...they touch. They are instinctively drawn to objects from the earth; the natural world.
Some time ago we gently erased the plastic sandpit world that our babies had been playing in and in its place we introduced a bounty of nature. Subtle temperature differences; cool rocks, warm timber. Varying weights, varying textures. Foraged feathers, pine cones and seed pods. Simple op shopped tools to inspire and ignite play. Natural objects that encourage fingers to linger; senses to heighten. A world of sensation.

ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous idea. Cohen's sand pit needs refilling. Might hide the plastic shovels and truck and fill it with stones and shells instead. Thanks for the inspiration. :)
