Les Marchés au Puces - { The Market of the Fleas }

Oh what a serendipitous find on the eve of Mothers' Day! I have been hunting for a toy cot for my little poppet for quite some time now and when and where I least expected to find one...I did. Such a tiny little bed evoked hazy memories of those first few nights home with our little bit of magic. She slept so wonderfully right from the start and my most treasured activity in the blur that was her first few months was to swaddle my dark haired angel in a muslin wrap and lie her down in her vast cot like a peaceful cocoon.

To a brand new Mumma, such small triumphs like a perfect swaddle, a breast feed without having to remove all of my top half clothes, having a nappy at the ready to catch that scary, squirty pooh (yes....we learnt the hard way!!) were little deposits into my motherhood bank of confidence. There were also many withdrawals such as cutting her precious little skin with the clippers when I first cut her nails (pause in typing while I beat myself about the head for the umpteeth time!) , running out of t-shirts as all the others were covered in either vomit or pooh and wearing just a maternity bra all day, scary veiny boobs...ok I'll stop, I'm scaring you now!

But oh the joy!! How can one little squirmy bundle evoke feelings so new, raw and utterly overwhelming? How can the smell of skin be so intoxicating? How can you love someone so much that it hurts? I'm not for a second saying it's an easy job nor one to take on lightly but if you choose or have chosen this profession be content in the knowledge that there is NO other job so well paid! For me, I have found my calling!
Happy Mothers' Day all you gorgeous Mummas out there. May your tomorrow be filled with empty washing and ironing baskets, clean floors and sinks....and an abundance of heart fluttering, sigh inducing cuddles!

  2. What a beautiful find Steph! Your post is just lovely, I too accidently cut my first little, now big, one with the clippers. I felt so bad about it too and never used clippers again on her little nails. I hope your day was special. Happy Mother's Day!xo

  3. oooh yes, those early days. Even when it was tough going, you know its all worth it and would do it all again for them. The only 'problem' now is that they are growing up way to quick!!

  6. This is adorable! I actually had a bigger version of this cot that I borrowed from a lovely family friend when my children were babies. They looked so sweet in it, all tucked up and cosy. I hope to see a little dolly in yours one day, I'm sure it will be played with over & over. Hope you had a happy day today, thank you for your sweet message xo

  13. Gorgeous post Steph. I remember it all so well even though it was three years ago since my youngest was so tiny! The little cot is beautiful. I was given exactly the same table cloth as an 18th birthday present. Mine was handmade in Portugal I believe. I wonder if yours has travelled that far too? Hope you had a lovely day.x

  16. Love the cot nearly as much as your sweet post, Steph...

    Those early days are as challenging the 4th, 5th, or 6th go-rounds as they are with the first. And we won't talk about the scary, veiny boobs...

  22. Oh Steph - I just had to stop and share. I did the same as you with my first baby. Made the tips of his fingers bleed! I've never met anyone else who had done that, but have to tell you that as a MIDWIFE (yes, very embarassing), I used to tell new mums just to pick fingernails to avoid this very thing. Shame I didn't follow my own advice!

  24. Oh I can so relate - especially at the moment :-) I have been looking for a little 2nd hand cradle too. My Nanna who is 86 actually has one (that I secretly have my eye on ;) but don't like to ask for it! My daughter loves playing with it when we go over!
