water play
Although Autumn is weaving her cosy, rich ways through fragments of our day the Summer sun does not dull without a fight, clinging to the very last. So when the days are balmy and the walls of our humble home are erring on claustrophobic I open the french doors and beckon the breeze inside. Thrifted wooden bowls are laid on the deck floor and I pad quietly to and fro with jugs of cool water to fill them. Spills are felt on bare feet and senses are enlivened. Props are added; a menagerie of animals, smooth stones and seed pods, fossicked shells and tiny boats. Vessels of all shapes and sizes fill the space and I eagerly call the babies to dip their toes in and become lost in this little watery world. I collect my cup of tea and knitting basket and settle in to watch their play. Imagination flows like the water stimulating it. Bottoms always end up wet.
Are the seasons taking their time to change for you?
We love Schleich animals and have amassed quite a collection. Some of them can be expensive but they are so lifelike and the quality is superb. We will be putting these ones away for the grandchildren.

we have quite the schliech collection too. My little girl has been collecting them since she was around 2. Little presents for Easter, stocking stuffers, from the Tooth Fairy, saved up pocket money, treat when out at the shops occassionally in place of a chocolate or somethingelse food related. She plays with them almost every day and has made environments for them, scenes to place behind them in the bookshelf where she keeps them, has taken photographs of them in the long grass like theyre in the jungle, All sorts of fun. Well worth the expense I think. Love the wooden bowls and water play.
ReplyDeleteI love schleich animals. My daughter has the horses. But I would love the ones you have. xo
ReplyDeleteGorgeous - looks so beautiful compared to a plastic blowup paddling pool. You have inspired me to look for more wooden bowls at the op-shop. Lisa x
ReplyDeleteWe adore Schleich in our household too Steph. Sage has a growing collection and we play with them almost daily. Next on 'her' wishlist is a set of dinosaurs and some pigs - she just loves pigs! We use our thrifted wooden bowls for storing blocks and threading sets for easy access, but using them for water play is a grand idea. What a beautiful childhood you are creating for your babies lovely lady xx
ReplyDeleteYes wooden bowls are quite an obsession! And i wouldn't have fossicked through your State's oppies so there's bound to be plenty left ;) x
DeleteThat looks so fun. I do love those little boats! Kellie xx
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful way to celebrate those last days of warm weather. I bet your little ones play for some time there pouring and splashing and exploring. xx
ReplyDeleteWhat gorgeous images! I love how your little ones are using the shell to pour water out of... Such natural exploration. My daughter has a tub of animals in the bath tub and shower. I love listening to her play and talk with them :)

Such a lovely way to while away an Autumn afternoon.
ReplyDeleteI miss those quiet play times, my boys are all about cricket and kicking balls and riding bikes now, still good but much more noisy and not conducive to me knitting at all :)
how lovely is this post, wanted to get my knitting bag out and pull a chair up next to you! x
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful piece of writing Steph. My boys are almost growing beyond this type of play and moving on to 'big boy' waterplay aka learning to surf!! Enjoy these days as I know you do x
ReplyDeleteSuch a heartwarming post... I think I need a wooden deck and some wooden bowls like you. :)
ReplyDeleteYou write so beautifully, Steph.
